# How to Install and Update a WordPress Theme

A theme controls the website's appearance and may also include important functionality.

## Install a Theme

1. Create a backup.
2. Open Appearance and Themes.
3. Add or upload the trusted theme.
4. Activate it.
5. Review menus, widgets, logo and page templates.
6. Test mobile and desktop layouts.

## Child Themes

Use a child theme for custom code so that vendor updates do not overwrite modifications.
