# How to Troubleshoot a 500 Internal Server Error

A 500 error is a general server-side failure that requires log review.

## First Actions

1. Note the exact URL and time.
2. Check the error log.
3. Rename a recently changed .htaccess file for a controlled test.
4. Disable the most recently added plugin or code change.
5. Check PHP version and required extensions.
6. Verify file permissions and disk space.

## Do Not Guess

**Important:** Repeated random configuration changes can hide the original cause. Keep a record of every change and restore known-good settings.

## Need Help?

If you still need assistance, open a support ticket through your Vertico client account and include the affected domain or email address, a screenshot of the error, and the approximate time the problem occurred. Never send passwords by email or support ticket.
