# What Are Nameservers and How Do They Work?

Nameservers tell the internet which DNS provider is responsible for a domain.

## What Nameservers Control

They direct queries for website, email and other DNS records to the correct DNS zone.

## When to Change Them

- Moving hosting providers.
- Using a third-party DNS service.
- Connecting a newly registered domain to existing hosting.

## Before Changing

**Important:** Copy all required DNS records first. An incomplete DNS zone can interrupt email and websites.

## Need Help?

If you still need assistance, open a support ticket through your Vertico client account and include the affected domain or email address, a screenshot of the error, and the approximate time the problem occurred. Never send passwords by email or support ticket.
